I started self-publishing in December 2011, hoping to earn enough money to buy a few gingerbread lattes. I was a broke graduate student, writing for fun, with no expectation of selling more than a couple dozen copies of my books. I’d worked in publishing as an acquisitions editor for a decade, so I knew several things as absolute truths:
- Books by unknown authors don’t sell.
- Books with no marketing budget don’t sell.
- Books with limited distribution don’t sell.
- Books with covers created in Powerpoint by amateur designers really, truly don’t sell.
To say that I was pleasantly surprised by the changing rules of the brand-new world of indie publishing is an understatement.
